How many watt-hours does a delivery shift need?

Battery marketing is written in miles. Miles depend on a test nobody publishes. This page does the arithmetic in watt-hours, in front of you, from figures each maker prints on its own site.

How many watt-hours does a full delivery shift need?

Roughly 20 watt-hours per mile. The ETT Trayser 2.0 publishes 1,056 Wh for 50–60 miles, which is 17.6–21.1 Wh per mile — call it 18–21 in London traffic. So a 30-mile shift draws about 600 Wh, a 40-mile shift about 800 Wh, and a 50-mile shift about 1,000 Wh.

That is the whole battery argument in one line: a 628 Wh pack (the figure Zoomo publishes for its Zero and its Sport) is comfortable up to about 30–35 miles at the same consumption, and a 1,056 Wh pack keeps going past 50. Add the assist level you actually ride at, a loaded box, a headwind and a cold February, and the gap widens rather than narrows.

The "implied Wh/mile" column is our arithmetic on each maker's own two published numbers, not a measurement. It exists to show that range ratings are not written to the same assumptions — which is the reason to compare packs, not promises. Cycl is a sister brand in the same group as ETT; its figures come from Otto Scooter, which rents the Carr-E. One bike is missing from this table because there is nothing to put in it: Zoomo lists a “Zoomo 1” plan in London at £55/week without publishing its battery capacity, while its global Zoomo 1 page shows “Dual 48V, 700 Wh”. If that twin-pack bike rents in London it carries more energy than a Trayser, and this table will say so as soon as Zoomo publishes the London spec.

What a week of charging costs

A full Trayser charge is 1.056 kWh of energy in the pack. Chargers are not perfect, so allow about 15% and you draw roughly 1.2 kWh from the wall. The Ofgem price cap sets the electricity unit rate at 26.11p per kWh for direct debit customers between 1 July and 30 September 2026, which puts a full charge at about 31p and five charges — a normal working week — at about £1.57. Six charges is £1.88. Under £2 either way.

Petrol does not compete with that, and neither do ULEZ or the Congestion Charge, which are £0 on a bicycle. What the number does not include is your time: an e-bike that needs a mid-shift charge costs you earning hours, which is the expensive part.

Amp-hours are half a number

Spec sheets often lead with amp-hours because the figure sounds bigger. Amp-hours only become energy once you multiply by voltage: watt-hours = amp-hours × volts. Zoomo's Zero page reads "13 & 17Ah" and then "628Wh", which is the number that means something. When a maker publishes amp-hours without volts, you cannot compare the pack to anything — treat that as not published.

Charging, swapping, and the third option

There are three ways to get through a long day. Charge overnight and ride one pack: fine up to about 50 miles on a Trayser. Carry or rent a second pack: Zoomo publishes an extra battery at £15 a week at select locations. Or swap: Otto Scooter exchanges a flat 1,056 Wh Trayser pack for a charged one at the Hammersmith workshop at no cost, which is the option that suits riders who are back through West London anyway.

What we do not publish

We do not publish a cycle-life figure, a capacity-after-two-winters figure, or a watt-hours-per-mile measured on instrumented bikes. When the workshop has enough data for those numbers to mean something, they will appear here with the sample size next to them.

How many watt-hours does a delivery e-bike need for a full shift?
Work backwards from your own mileage. The ETT Trayser 2.0 publishes 1,056 Wh for 50–60 miles, which is about 18–21 watt-hours per mile in London conditions. At 20 Wh per mile a 40-mile shift draws roughly 800 Wh, a 30-mile shift roughly 600 Wh. That is why a 628 Wh pack — the figure Zoomo publishes for its Zero — is comfortable on a short shift and tight on a long one.
How far will 1,056 Wh take a delivery rider?
ETT rates the Trayser 2.0 at 50–60 miles (80–120 km) per charge, or roughly 6–8 working hours, depending on assist level, load, weather and how much of the shift is stop-start. The pack is removable and takes about 4 hours to fill from a standard UK 3-pin socket.
What does it cost to charge a delivery e-bike for a week?
Under £2. A full 1,056 Wh charge is 1.056 kWh at the battery; allow about 15% for charger losses and you draw roughly 1.2 kWh from the socket. At 26.11p per kWh — the Ofgem price cap electricity unit rate for direct debit customers, 1 July to 30 September 2026 — that is about 31p a charge, so five full charges in a working week cost about £1.57.
Why compare batteries in watt-hours instead of miles or amp-hours?
Because watt-hours are the only figure nobody can re-test into a better number. Range depends on the test conditions, which makers rarely publish: ETT quotes 1,056 Wh for 50–60 miles (18–21 Wh per mile), while Zoomo quotes 628 Wh for 80 km (about 12.6 Wh per mile). Amp-hours are incomplete on their own — 13 Ah means nothing until you know the voltage. Watt-hours are amp-hours times volts, and that is the energy in the pack.
Is a removable battery better for a delivery rider?
Yes, for two practical reasons. You charge indoors instead of leaving the bike near a socket, and a flat pack can be exchanged rather than waited out. On the Trayser the whole 1,056 Wh pack lifts off the frame and Otto Scooter swaps flat packs for charged ones at the Hammersmith workshop at no cost, which is what makes a double shift possible.
